    Middle Level Education Aims for Equity and Inclusion, but Do Our School Websites Meet ADA Compliance?

    An often-overlooked component of a middle school website is the necessity for that website to be accessible to those with disabilities, while following the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Workforce Rehabilitation Act. In support of the belief that support the belief that inclusive education and respect for diversity should be integrated throughout the school, this study investigated the accessibility of middle school websites in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio by selecting a random sample of 150 schools and analyzing their homepages using WAVE (Web Accessibility Versatile Evaluator), which reports accessibility violations by annotating a copy of the page that was evaluated and presenting embedded icons and indicators to disclose breaches with ADA. Out of 150 districts, 54% had errors that need immediate attention and all 150 schools had alerts of likely violations that ranged from alt-text omissions and empty or confusing links to issues with color contrast and keyboard-only navigation. The article proceeds to give practical suggestions for eliminating many of the errors, even for those shareholders with less than sophisticated technological expertise

    Five benchmark programs were obtained and run on the NASA Lewis CRAY X-MP/24. A comparison was made between the programs codes and between the methods for calculating performance figures. Several multitasking jobs were run to gain experience in how parallel performance is measured

    In a recent paper, Marr, Muller-Linow and Hutt [Phys. Rev. E 75, 041917 (2007)] investigate an artificial dynamic system on metabolic networks. They find a less complex time evolution of this dynamic system in real networks, compared to networks of reference models. The authors argue that this suggests that metabolic network structure is a major factor behind the stability of biochemical steady states. We reanalyze the same kind of data using a dynamic system modeling actual reaction kinetics. The conclusions about stability, from our analysis, are inconsistent with those of Marr et al. We argue that this issue calls for a more detailed type of modeling

    Clasts in the CM2 carbonaceous chondrite Lonewolf Nunataks 94101: evidence for aqueous alteration prior to complex mixing

    Clasts in the CM2 carbonaceous chondrite Lonewolf Nunataks (LON) 94101 have been characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy and electron microprobe analysis to determine their degrees of aqueous alteration, and the timing of alteration relative to incorporation of clasts into the host. The provenance of the clasts, and the mechanism by which they were incorporated and mixed with their host material are also considered. Results show that at least five distinct types of clasts occur in LON 94101, of which four have been aqueously altered to various degrees and one is largely anhydrous. The fact that they have had different alteration histories implies that the main part of aqueous activity occurred prior to the mixing and assimilation of the clasts with their host. Further, the presence of such a variety of clasts suggests complex mixing in a dynamic environment involving material from various sources. Two of the clasts, one containing approximately 46 vol% carbonate and the other featuring crystals of pyrrhotite up to approximately 1 mm in size, are examples of unusual lithologies and indicate concentration of chemical elements in discrete areas of the parent body(ies), possibly by flow of aqueous solutions

    We discuss different approaches to photon isolation in fixed-order calculations and present a new next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD calculation of R13/8ÎłR_{13/8}^\gamma, the ratio of the inclusive isolated photon cross section at 8 TeV and 13 TeV, differential in the photon transverse momentum, which was recently measured by the ATLAS collaboration.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure.     Using Constructivist Teaching to Shift the Paradigm for Pre-Service Philosophy of Education Statements

    This article examines what the author perceives as a need to fortify the quality of philosophy of education statements submitted by pre-service teaching candidates. Because the educational philosophy is frequently viewed as “artificial,” it fails to provide a systematic, meaningful, and articulate guideline for new teachers whose underlying beliefs ultimately dominate and shape their instructional practices. Paramount is a return to the underlying premise that a teacher’s philosophy of education is, foremost, personal and reflective. Candidates must share in the decision-making process and be engaged in their own construction of a philosophy of education. Otherwise, teachers in training find it challenging to discriminate theory and practice in authentic classroom settings. By focusing their attention on direct, cogent elements of the philosophy statement and by actively participating in the formal educational philosophies, candidates can discover a congruency between what they envision as their role in the classroom and how that role will impact what they teach, how they teach it, and how they assess

    Z+jet production at NNLO

    We give a brief overview of our calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to Z+jet production in hadronic collisions. Phenomenological results are presented which comprise various differential distributions for 8 TeV proton-proton collisions. A significant reduction of the scale uncertainties is observed throughout as we move from NLO to NNLO. We further discuss how this calculation can be used to describe the inclusive Z-boson production at large transverse momentum. To this end, the theory prediction is compared to the measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Here, the inclusion of NNLO QCD effects are found to result in a substantial improvement in the agreement between theory and data for the normalised distributions.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to appear in the proceedings of Loops and Legs in Quantum Field Theory, 24-29 April 2016, Leipzig, German

    A Methodology for Invasive Programming on Virtualizable Embedded MPSoC Architectures

    AbstractExploiting the huge logic resources in current embedded devices has led to a plethora of on-chip multi-processor architec- tures. However, besides instantiating more and more soft-core processors on a chip, developing applications suited for such architectures still remains a hard task. A further step in the evolution of embedded multi-processing might be the so called Invasive Programming. In this paradigm, an application may be switched from sequential to parallel execution at runtime. A task may then dynamically invade currently unused processor resources in a multi-processor system to resume in parallel execution mode. This hardens existing problems, however, because not only the development of suited software, but also the creation of multi-processor architectures supporting this paradigm is needed. Therefore, this work presents a concise methodology to enable Invasive Programming properties on an embedded Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC). This is achieved by combining a designer-guided code parallelization approach with a virtualizable, generic, and scalable embedded MPSoC architecture. To resolve data dependencies during task invasion, a processor-independent task-based communication scheme for the MPSoC is proposed. Moreover, a tool framework dedicated to the generic creation of virtualizable MPSoC is provided. The approach is demonstrated by the generation of an MPSoC featuring eight processors executing an application which dynamically switches at runtime between sequential and parallel execution
